My Journey with IRMSA

The Initial Contact

We arrived in Chicago on the 1st of October and immediately toured the city. This had been my first time out of the country and I was fortunate that the USA would be my first destination. The city of Chicago is littered with massive buildings, there is an abundance of art and history. We spent the first three days at the Union League Club of Chicago, a private club with much history and art behind it. I am a big fan of the arts and the Union League Club has a great collection of art pieces. I viewed my first Claude Monet painting at the Union League, walking and exploring each floor with its own style and heritage. While in Chicago we went on a water ride around the city, sight-seeing the beautifully constructed buildings and learning about the heritage of Chicago.

Upon our arrival in Chicago the Katie school of Insurance and Financial Services invited us to attend the Katie School Hall of Fame Innovation and Leadership Awards dinner. The Katie School Hall of Fame was launched to inspire the next generation of industry leaders through the example of others who represent innovation, leadership and professional excellence. Being part of this event bought so much proud moments onto my thoughts; it encouraged me to strive for excellence and growth.

Apart from attending classes, networking with professionals, we got to experience other things in the United States. Mr Jim Jones we who the first person we were in contact with the minute we arrived in America he was so accommodating and taught us so much in those 2 weeks spent with him, the people we meet opened they homes and hearts for us, we felt like we belonged there; they made us feel at home away from home. In Chicago we got to admire the beauty of the city, we got to ride in the water taxi were we got to see the architecture of the buildings. Mr Jim Jones took us to quite a few places to enjoy in America; the first was the American Football game, the game was quite confusing for I knew absolutely nothing of the game, but being part of the game I blended in and was screaming my lungs out to The Red Birds who lost the game to the opponent. In Springfield we went to Abraham Lincoln’s museum, we learned about the history of America, how Abraham Lincolns fought for the unity of America that was destroyed by slavery; one of his famous quotes were “A house divided against itself cannot stand”.

Risk Management is a discipline that supports the achievement of an organisation’s objectives by addressing the full spectrum of its risks. In South Africa we were introduced to Risk Management, we went to different industries to learn about how they practice risk management within they organisations. At Tsogo Sun we learned and got to have fun at the same time. We were introduced to the risk systems that they use to protect themselves from being vulnerable to liability, we got a tour of Monte Casino which we were so amused on how sizeable the place was; we also had a bird watching exercise we had to do, apart from being afraid of the birds I learned how to conduct a risk register with the element of having fun while doing so. A full day was spent at Nedbank, different speakers were asked to address us, they made the day so insightful; they demonstrated how risk management forms part of they DNA. At National Treasury we learned a lot on public finances, being an economics student it was very insightful to learn first-hand about the public sector, how resources are allocated effectively and how the National Treasury operates. Learning about the insurance industry in America, being at Marsh looking at insurance from a South African prospective I came to the conclusion that insurance is one of the best tools used for the transferal of risk. At Imperial Holdings we were introduced to the logistic and vehicle department, I didn’t know much about the automobile industry but after our field trip at Imperial I learned quite a few products within the automobile industry.

The Impact

I am proud being part of the Cruywagen IRMSA Risk Foundation, the experience was rejuvenating for my career path; it encouraged me to continue working hard to be the best next leader in risk management.
