My Journey with IRMSA

Initial Contact

I first heard about the IRMSA in 2013 during my Honours study. The IRMSA was affording all Risk Management students an opportunity for apply for a two week internship programme with two other students from Illinois State University. I applied for the internship, was shortlisted, interviewed then I was awarded the internship. Little did I know that this opportunity would open so many doors for me professionally.

The Journey

The internship entailed shadowing various risk professionals across different organisations to gain insight on what it entailed to be a Risk professional. Some of these organisations were visited included Imperial, GRMS, Marsh, Tsogo Sun, Denel-PMP. All four interns including myself stayed at a really posh hotel in Sandton during the duration of the internship. It was during this time that I spent three days at Nedbank with the Enterprise-wide Risk Management team and was introduced to my current employer. There was also some time during the internship for cultural activities and sightseeing.

The Impact

The internship was an incredible experience affording me with the opportunity to enrich my education with high-impact experiences and the ability to apply classroom learnings in professional settings. The professional experience affirmed my career aspirations to become a Risk professional. I was able to build relationships with professionals in the industry and explore a wide variety of opportunities.
